Ogden EQ 2015 Blues Explosion: Tony Holiday & Jordan Young

I fall short of words when describing these two. Two stellar, gritty dirty blues men who have been traveling the U.S. for years and showing the U.S. what Utah has to offer. They have played 100s of festivals, dive bars and every juke joint around.

And, as part of the Ogden FamDam and EQ events we LOVE them. They have been super supportive and always bring all of their heart and soul to the stage. O-Town crew has something special going on and they know it!

Tony Holiday

Tony rolls solo and plays with the Velvetones or sits in with many serious blues players.

You can check out a lot of his music here,

NEXT UP:
JordanYoung and Candy's River House

Damn, this man. Sings blues like nobody's business and he brings the ladies to the stage like a moth to a flame. All components combine -  gravely blues singing, dirty blues guitar, a great band and Blondie-locks good looks - don't miss his performance.

Here he is on FB,

FallEQ2015: The Entire Schedule l!!!

Here it is, the entire taco!!!!

Print this. Put it in your pocket. Put it into your phtographic memory. Either way -- get it!

Community Donations Coordinator: Lindsey Hoffman!! Youth Futures!

Meet this beautiful lady. Every year we collect donations to a charity or organization in our community. This year, our sweet lady Lindsey Hoffman will be collecting donations for Youth Futures.

This is the first under-age youth shelter in Utah who serves young teens, who in the past would have been pushed out of shelters on to the streets. Often walking away with a sleeping bag and a bit of food and sad care givers watching them walk away.

Youth Futures helps our youth, often LGBT, help them find a way to a safe haven and off the streets.

We will have boxes as the gate and at medical to drop your donations in.

Or, you can donate here,
http://www.yfut.org/#HowYouCanHelp

The wish list is here.
http://www.yfut.org/docs/Wish%20list.pdf

And I'll just put it out there...if you want... for every $1 you put into my hand I will donate or purchase $1.50 towards wish list items. I am not rich, but I care about our children. Show me some love! I can do it, you can do it too. ( I guess I should put in here, if you don't know who I am, I am Honey, the writer of this blog and an EQ organizer).

Fall EQ2015: DJ Lineup! Dance!

The DJ stage is located south of the pond and under some beautiful trees. This stage pretty much runs 24-7 and will finish at EQ with a Sunday 6am sunrise set.

This stage is ran by Matt Housely and features a LOT of local talent. Matt heads up a lot of local shows and runs Nocturnal Grooves in June at The Fort Buenaventura. You can learn more about Matt and what he does here,

Night Spin Kollective

You can learn more about his DJ work here,.

IN2GR8

A lot of his DJs have music samples posted on Sound Cloud, we suggest you look them up and give them a listen.

FallEQ 2015 Featured Band: The Highway Thieves

For something new and hard to define, check out The Highway Thieves.

This Ogden band self defines as "Whiskey-Folk-Rock." I am not sure what that means, but could be drunk hippies who can rock? What I do know is that this band has some of the best vocals around, which is hard to find in these parts.

The band is lead by Jon Turner, who also happens to run the acoustic stage at FallEQ 2015. He also runs the Ogden Unplugged shows at The Lighthouse (and he has tickets for sale BTW).

Other band members include:

Jesse Hodshire- Bass,Vocals
Kyler Lewis- Keys
Bill Bitner- Sax, Flute, Harp
Matt Johnson- Drums
Devin Turner- Vocals
Morgan Thomas- Guitar

AND, they just released a new CD, which you can purchase from Jon Turner or check it our here,

The Down & Dirty: The Rules that No One Likes to Talk About - UPDATED

(Said with humor of course)

No one likes to talk about these things, but it is a thing. We all want to feel safe, happy and free. But let's get through a few things.

Keep your eyes open for those that might be in need. Take them to medical if needed or contact security if you see a dangerous situation. Medical can call security, or there will be security at the gate and often on the bridge. Do not intervene or put yourself into a potentially dangerous situation. Let security handle things like: violence, event crashers or reckless behavior.

Keep your clothes on
We are an all age event and in a state park. Keep the pecker tucked away and the taco and titty bar private. If you want to have an "adult" themed camp keep it out of the eyes of the youngins. Of course we don't care about breast feeding, feed your babe when needed.

Open Dealing of Illegal substances
Yep, not supported and you are out if spotted. Security has the right to contact law enforcement if necessary.

Underage drinking
Those between the age of 18 and 20 are allowed to come into the event as minor adults, but do not share your drinks with them please. They will be wearing a bright red wrist band. Security may contact law enforcement if required. Be smart kids.

Lost Dogs
If you come in with a dog contract and let your dog run free, you are both kindly asked to leave. Please pick up after your dog. Do not leave your dog left alone barking at your camp or in your car.

Violence
Fighting, abuse, domestic violence - no go. Please contact security if you see a scary situation.

Child Neglect
Children must be attended at all times. If you find that you are not able to care for your child we will request that a sober, safe person remove the child from the event, or child protective services. If you find a lost child, bring them to medical. Also watch out for teenagers unattended who may be looking to get into mischief.

Driving around the park
Get to your camp and PARK IT! This year will be one-way driving around the pond and if you need to go in and out of the event we ask that you park outside the gate. Bring your bike or walk. Walkers have the right away at all times.

Illness or incapacitation
If you are not coherent or unable to take care of yourself we may have to request medical assistance for you. The medical crew is there to keep you healthy and alive. Please try to keep you and your friend's safe.

No wristbands
You are required to have your wristband on at all times. If you do not have a wristband we can kindly walk you to the gate to get one. You also will need to present your ID to the security team.

Vandalism or Disrespect for the Park or Stage Crews
Please help keep the park beautiful, porta-potties upright and clean, and stages free from violation or theft.

LNT - Pack-it-in-and-Pack-it-out
There is now one here to clean up your mess. Last Spring we cleaned up THREE tents! You are adults, take care of your own responsibilities. Leave the park cleaner than you left it - this includes the fire pits. Do not use the fire pits as garbage cans.

Sunday - You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here!
The party is over Sunday by noon, please plan to be up by ten to pick up your camp and to help clean up the park. Be out of the park by noon unless you have paid Weber County for an extra day. If you are part of the clean up crew, pick up your camp first, then help clean up the park.

Ok, now that that is over, let's all have a good time!!!

FallEQ 2015:How to get through gate

First off, above is our greeter leads, Jeff and Sarah. Say hi to them and give them mad loves!

At gate we will have two hired security persons 24-7  and volunteer greeters during busy hours. The security crew is responsible for checking IDs and managing ticket money. The greeters will help you with knowing what you need to know about the event such as where to camp or park, dog rules, kids rules and more. They will also give you your wristbands.

We are a private event. So you may be asked about what band you are coming to see or who invited you. We also really want people to stay the whole weekend, so if you do not have camping gear in your car, you may be asked to park outside the gate.

Other things,

  • You must preset your ID
  • If you are bringing a dog in, you must have a dog contract
  • You cannot bring in children under 18 that you are not a parent or legal guardian of
  • If your are in a band or are a DJ that is scheduled you will have to present your real name and ID
  • If you need to leave the event for work or other reasons you'll need to park outside the gate
  • RVs take up a lot of room, if you bring in an RV it is an exta $20 if you take up more space than a typical truck
  • If you don't know anything about the dog contract be prepared to have the dog's license information and $15 for your dog pass
Getting through gate is easy. Be patient. Have your ID and tickets ready. Give the greeters crazy mad love, because they LOVE you!

FallEQ 2015 Featured Band: Shaky Trade!

According to about 9 out of 10 festy go-ers this is one of their favorite bands. Shaky Trade band members have been playing together for nearly 12 years and bring to the stage some serious jammy funk, horn section included. You cannot help yourself from shuffling around your dance shoes when you hear them play.

I like this one since our cat is named Charlie and he cannot leave chicken alone, for the REAL story behind this song ask Billy Bommer.

Charlie! Leave that Chicken Alone!
https://www.reverbnation.com/shakytrade/song/12914087-chicken-with-charlie

Influences for this band include:
Orgone, Galactic, The New Mastersounds, Tower of Power, James Brown

Get to the stage with your dancing feet and 20 of your best friends for this band. They are playing Friday night the 18th at EQ. Your face will melt like this,

Check out this awesome video here, I dare you!

Theme Camps: What they are and why you should have one

"Theme camp" is a Burning Man coined term and many of our original EQ organizers have a BM back ground, so our EQs have evolved into a dirty Utah music festival plus Burning Man hybrid. Including the encouragement for and enjoyment of theme camps.

First off, theme camps are fun. It gives you and your friends a chance to work together to create an experience for yourself and for others. So, what is a theme camp?

While it is difficult to formally define, in the simplest of terms it is a camp with a theme. Maybe your camp is something like Whiskey Dicks and you feature a whiskey tasting, or Mama's -n- Babes and you camp together with other young mothers, maybe your camp is Sugar Coma Fortune Telling and you give out candy and fortunes, maybe you are a ukulele camp and everyone there plays the tiny stringed instrument, or perhaps a Water Blast camp where you sponsor a water gun battle...your only limitation is your imagination. The main component of a theme camp is that it is not internally pointed, it fosters community and the opportunity to provide others with an experience. We'll have a white board at the medtent where you can post your events. Get creative friends, ADD to the experience!

EQ is a non-vending, gift economy event, which means the possibilities are endless! At NotQuinox I brought to the meadow stage area a bacon and bloody mary party and our camp hosted a soup kitchen event. It is fun to meet new people and share talents, do it!

In terms of camping, the first group site after the bridge on the left is for families and people who do not want to camp close to the noise. FamDamily camping, not all but many of us, will be on the grass on the West side of the pond, any type of "adult" themed camps are asked to camp north of the pond and north of the DJ stage. Walk-in, minimalists campers can camp anywhere but would be most suitable under the trees -  first right into the park to the west behind regular campsites, great for hammocks and such. Power is limited so you may need to bring a generator in if your camp needs power.

We can't wait to see what you create!

FallEQ 2015 Featured Artist: Ryan Bassett

Ryan Bassett has been infiltrating and energizing  the Ogden music scene since he was old enough to belly up to the bar. He has played EVERY EQ event. Along with his co-stage manager Greg Daniels, they have scheduled and managed the main stage for the past four years. He doesn't like to toot his own horn, but this year he will be playing in FOUR bands and running the meadow stage. Ryan has done pretty well at running his stage, he is thoughtful about where he places bands, he considers what type of music they play, how often they play out and their other factors to decide the best placement. He also tries to work around working band's schedules, which is a feat! He is not biased to his own bands rather his goal is to create the best audience experience.

Ryan is a rhythm man - big man on bass. His bass lines have greatly improved though the years and he especially enjoys laying down the FUNK! If you are in a band and have any stage issues or questions - he is your first point of contact. He'll be at the meadow stage for most of the event or you can find our RV in FamDamily Camp by the pond (our RV has a big pineapple painted on it).

You will not want to miss his performances, first off Pinetop Inferno
https://www.reverbnation.com/pinetopinferno
Pinetop Inferno belts out dirty blues originals and funky versions of some blues standards. You'll want to hit the stage when they are playing to "shake that thing."  Everyone of these men are stellar musicians and swell guys.

Next up  Tim Daniels Band.
The Tim Daniel's band consists of a wide variety of performers and often with talented guest artists sitting in for a special treat. The music is defined mostly as rockin' country with a twist of blues.
https://www.reverbnation.com/timdanielsmusic

Next up,  Hotel le Motel
This band is fronted by rocker Jason Sawyer and features all originals. These musicians have been playing together for over seven years in numerous bands resulting in some really tight sets. If you want to head bang a little, make sure to see this band play. Don't forget your jeans and black band t-shirt!
https://soundcloud.com/hotel-le-motel

And last but not least, The Mistakes
This group of musicians play classic jam songs with a tiny smearing of blues and funk. They feature some originals as well as classic jam music..https://www.reverbnation.com/themistakes7

Ryan thinks this post makes him seems vain, but if you are running the festival main stage and playing in four bands, a little recognition is warranted. Thank you Ryan for all you do for FallEQ!

Leave-No-Trace: You ARE the Cleanup Crew!

Buenaventura is located on 84 acres of preserved history and community land. We are fortunate to be able to host our events in this space. There is a river, pond, trees, grass and wildlife. We strive to leave the park cleaner than it was before our event. To do you part, you'll need to pack in and pack out all of your refuse. You will not see garbage cans and bins everywhere, you are responsible for everything that you bring in. This includes tiny things like cigarette butts, nut shells, orange peels....it does not matter if it if organic material, we adhere to the Burning Man principle of Matter Out of Place (MOOP) - if it doesn't belong there, meaning it is out of place, pack it out.

While we have a Leave-No-Trace (LNT) team it is not their job to clean up your messes. They will be helping with Leave-No-Trace education and can provide you with things like garbage bags if needed. If you would like to learn more about our team leads, see here
You can also volunteer and sign up for LNT trace shifts, here http://ogdenfamdamily-e111.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=10476

Here are some tips on how to keep the park clean:

Smokers
Put your cigarette butts in your pocket, purse or container. Do NOT throw your butts, EVER. These are super hard to pick up and some one will have to pick up your butts, don't make your friends have to do that please.

Plates, bowls, cups and more
We do not give out or condone the use of one-time-use containers. Bring your own cup, utensils and such. There is water to clean your dishes. Reuse also equates to you hauling out less garbage as well. While we provide free coffee and hot drinks, you will not find coffee mugs there, bring your own. Even bring a few extra in to share.

Dogs
If you have signed a dog contract and bring a dog in. You must clean up 100% of their poo. If you forgot baggies, there will be some available by the greeters at the gate or at medical at all hours.

Food boxes and containers
To help lighten your load out, consider removing the packaging used to encapsulate processed food at home before you pack. If you are bringing in fresh food, have a plan to manage the parts of the food you do not use or leftovers.

Beer Cans
Create a plan for your camp and associated camps to recycle beer and or soda cans. If you are going to the stage put your empty cans in a back pack, cooler or wagon so you are not tempted to leave your cans at the stage. If you are worried about leakage smash your cans and contain them in a ziplock bag.

Feminine Hygiene Products and Diapers
Do not discard these kinds of hygiene products into the porta-potties. It clogs up the portables and frankly, no one wants to see that stuff floating around. There are eight flush toilets available. Or plan on placing used hygiene products into a baggie or ziplock bag and dispose of it properly. On another note, if you need tampons or pads they are available in the medical tent.

Leaky Cars - Oil Slicks
If you know your car might be a little leaky and you want to park on the grass or dirt. Place a piece of cardboard or other safe material under your vehicle to prevent chemicals from hitting the soil.

Fire Pits
First of all do not create a fire pit. You can only have a fire in a designated fire pit. Not every area has one, so make new friends and share one. Second, do not put things in there that are not meant to burn. We have spent many hours digging cans and glass out of fire pits, don't do it! Please. Also do not cut down any live wood. You can use fallen and dead wood however.

There are many more ways that you can help keep the park clean and preserved. These few suggestions are particular to our specific event. Through the years we have picked up entire camps, cleaned up rogue fire pits, cleaned out fire pits, picked up lost clothing, picked up at least 5000 cigarettes, 2000 beer cans and just random crap. Leaving things behind is disrespectable to the space, Weber County, the event organizers and you personally. Be a conscious camper and also help your fellow camp mates make good decisions as well.

Here are some more tips by the Earth Guardians, a Burning Man LNT group,
Please share with your friends so they can prepare properly for this magical weekend along the river.

Which would you prefer? It is not hard to answer. I know we can make this the best year ever.

This?
Or this?
This?
Or this?

I think you know the right answer. Thank you in advice for keeping our park clean.

Featured Artist: Talia Keys

(Above pic credit to the Electric Forest Festival)

Thank you Talia. For all the music and passion you have brought to the EQ stage the past four years. Since her first appearance on the EQ stage in Ogden with Marinade in 2010 Talia has gone on multiple tours and recorded. Her latest album Fool's Gold is a solo release with Talia playing many of the tracks along with guest artists. Currently she is on a North West tour and she'll be back in Utah soon to open for Allen Stone September 15th. If you can make this show at The Depot you should. We saw Allen Stone years ago at Mojos and can now say, "we knew him when." You can see Talia Keys at FallEQ 2015 and soon will be able to say, "I knew her when."  Talia is taking off - don't miss her while she is here!

To learn more about Talia Keys, see her website:
http://www.taliakeys.com/index.html

Here you can find music tracks, video and her latest album (hint, hint you can buy tracks and the full album from her website). You can also get CDs at EQ and have them autographed by Miss Keys in person. We have her latest release and play it ALL of the time. It is our go-to album when driving back through the canyon from Snow Basin gigs.

FallEQ 2015: How to be the best live music fan EVER!

The first thing you need to do is get your bum to the stage.  Even if you can hear the music from your camp, the bands really like to see your faces and hear your cheers and see you dancing! We have a nice big venue space and plenty of room to share. EQ's are not stuffy you can bring your non-glass drinks and your kids to the stage. Bring everyone and have fun!

We know yo'all like modern conveniences so come to the stage and post up!

Bring your shade,

Bring your cooler wagon,
 Bring your grub,
Bring your big-ass chairs,

But most of all, bring your love of music!

And of course share the love and leave-no-trace..oh and no lasers...they'll poke your eye out!

Also, share their music, buy their CDs, like their FB, follow them on Twitter, help your favorite bands out!

Dogs: Rules and Regulations

Dogs want to have as much fun as you and want to have fun with their owners; however, in the past we have had issues with owners not picking up excrement and the dogs running around in packs. The dogs had a grand ol' time but were unattended. Weber County was not happy with this situation so we stopped allowing dogs. But Nocturnal Grooves experimented with a new dog policy that worked pretty well for them. We created our own dog policy based on what worked  for them this summer.

First, we are a private event, we have consulted with a few and have learned that we do not HAVE to let dogs in. Not even service dogs. We are assuming though that service dogs are properly documented and have their shots and paperwork should be up to date. I will give a few copies of this policy to those who are selling tickets or you can download it and print it yourself, either way be prepared to have the information filled out before you come through the gate.

You can download / print the dog contract here:

Share this link with your dog owning friends.

Basically to fill out the form you will need:
  • Rabies Lic#
  • Lic#
And the dog will be required to be on a leash at all times and well-behaved. If your dog is not licensed you can obtain a license through your municipality provided that you have its rabies shot information which you can get from your vet. And of course you'll need to clean up after your pet. If your dog is young and not socialized yet, you may want to consider only bringing them in for limited hours until they can learn to be calm. Or you can walk them to the leash-free dog park by the baseball field and let them run for a while to expend their energy.

Click here for Ogden City licensing.

It is not expensive and in most cases $10- $30 per year.

The dog entrance fee is $15 for the entire event and we will tag them with the owner's contact information.

If you feel that your dog is not quiet ready for a festival experience, you can check out some Yelp reviews and maybe find a good fur baby sitter. Or perhaps you can work with a few friends to take care of your dogs outside the event. Thank you for being a responsible pet owner.

Here is an example of a dog having a great time at EQ, but where are the parents? Maybe he is on stage looking for them?
